At the age of 7 Akasha’s parents wanted her to take ballet lessons to give her balance, in preparation for training in Martial Arts so, she started training in a community recreation center in her home town. At the age of 8 dance became one of 2 majors at the School for the Creative and Performing Arts where she studied ballet, tap, jazz, modern, country and African dance. At the age of 15 with 8 years of experience and performance Akasha moved on to the drill team in her high school and cheerleading later in life. While in college in 1994 Akasha worked in a salon that was next door to a Mediterranean café that had a flyer in the window advertising a belly dancer. After a night of seeing a “a bellydancer” dance with a snake, in an exotic costume, in an atmosphere reminiscent of a harem it was all she wrote! After the show she asked how she could go about taking private lessons, and soon began to do just that! Unfortunately a couple months after starting lessons the life a poor college student took it’s toll and Akasha could no longer afford the lessons. In looking through the phone book for entertainment for her child’s first birthday party in 1998 destiny met Akasha again! Akasha’s lessons flourished for two years where she learned with students who grew to be well known around the Tri-State area as well. Nicole “Ishara Gamal” (r.i.p. my friend) of Pangea Dance and Reflection dance troupe in IL, Heidi Westfelt now with Giananda and The Center for World Rhythms, Jackie “Odessa” a soloist, and Katy of Anaya Gypsy. After another hiatus of 3 years Akasha met Conchi in 2003. After a year of private lessons Conchi asked Akasha to Join her dance troupe called “Alhambra.” Akasha has been a member of the Alhambra dance Troupe since then and currently dances in many festivals, wedding receptions, birthday parties, cultural events and much more! Akasha also has began building her future generation of dancers by teaching classes in several locations around Cincinnati in hopes of forming her own troupe one day. |
